چکیده

Recently we reported studies of the absorption of glutamic acid and glutamine from the gut of the cat by analysis of the portal blood, and of the concentration changes of the two amino acids in the peripheral blood plasma after oral administration of glutamic acid to human subjects (3). In a further study of the fate of glutamic acid and glutamine in the animal body, the uptake of the two amino acids by brain, muscle, liver, and kidney after intravenous administration to rats and mice has now been determined. Changes in total amino acid nitrogen have been estimated previously in brain and other tissues (4, 5) after the intravenous administration of glutamic acid to rats and dogs, but this unspecific measure of amino acid concentration cannot give evidence regarding the movement of particular amino acids, especially since it has been found that a high blood level of glutamic acid causes an increased uptake of other amino acids by the tissues (3, 6).

Glutamine, glutamic acid, ammonia administration, and tissue glutamine.

Despite the recent revival of interest in amide-nitrogen metabolism in animal tissues, only limited information is available on the effect of glutamine administration on the glutamine content of blood and tissues. Bessman et al. (1) found that glutamine was not converted to glutamic acid during intestinal absorption. More recently, this same group of workers (2) has studied the uptake of glutam...

INVESTIGATION ON ANTI-GLUTAMIC ACID DECARBOXYLASE ANTIBODIES IN TYPE I DIABE TES MELLITUS

Antibodies directed against the enzyme glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) are believed to be the main cause of destruction of pancreatic islet cells in type I (insulin dependent) diabetes mellitus. The enzyme was found both in the brain and pancreatic beta cells. Although similarities in identity of GAD in human and rat brain have been demonstrated, little is known about the interaction betw...

Significant Changes in the Activity of L-Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase of Mouse Hypothalamus After Peripheral Injection of Cholecystokinin-8 and Caerulein

The activity of one of the metabolizing enzymes of - aminobutyric acid, (GABA), was determined in mouse hypothalamus after peripheral injections of cholecystokinin-8 (CCK-8) and caerulein (CLN). The activity of this rate-limiting enzyme, L-glutamic acid decarboxylase, (GAD), did not change thirty minutes after peripheral injections of either CCK-8 or CLN in doses of 50g/kg body weight. Howeve...
